Attributes of a good leader

Leadership is one trait that is different from one’s ability to manage people. Apart from being a good manager, what one requires to be a good leader are his behavioral qualities that inspire others, and people repose their faith in him. There are many qualities, or traits that are required to be a good leader. Keeping cross cultural differences in mind, honesty, fearless attitude, perseverance and sincerity are some qualities that are universally accepted as traits of a good leader.

Leader should be someone who is seen as one of the crowd, yet has the ability to stand out. He should be able to make people follow him, and he should inspire and motivate others. Here are some of the qualities that are a must for a leader.

Good Character: This is of paramount importance to be a leader. He should be able to set example for others to follow. It is the impression of a person over others that makes him a good or bad leader.

Ability to communicate: Not only should a leader have the ability to deliver excellent speeches, he should have the ability to convey to his associates what he really means. He should listen to other’s voices as well.

Ability to see through future: Someone with vivid plans for the future is a good leader. He should be able to foresee what is going to happen as this will bring him the respect of the followers.

Good and quick decision making: There come many instances when the leader has to make quick decisions. A person cannot be accepted as a leader if he does not have the ability to take, quick and good decisions in urgent situations.

Reliability: A good leader is always reliable and you can take him on his word. He takes responsibility for success, as well as failure. Those who shirk responsibility and blame others in the event of failure can never be good leaders.

Respect and value others: A good leader understands that others are vital to the common goal and he makes such an atmosphere that everyone cooperates to achieve the common goal. He knows that the success of his plans depends on cooperation between the members and he inspires his followers to work as links of a chain.

Ability to calm down nerves: In a tense situation, it is the responsibility of a good leader to sooth the feelings of team members. He should be able to calm others when they are agitated.

Optimism: A good leader is always optimistic, no matter how grave the situation is. If a leader gives up hope, his followers develop panic.
